When do doctors speak about IVF?

Usually after some time and some tests. Doctors often advise a fertility check once a couple has tried for a year without success, or for six months if the woman is 35 or older. IVF may be talked about when:

  • no clear cause is found
  • the fallopian tubes are blocked or damaged
  • egg reserve is low
  • sperm count or movement is low
  • endometriosis is affecting conception
  • earlier treatment has not helped

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Both partners are usually tested, as either may be affected. If IVF is not the right step yet, the doctor will tell you honestly.

Your first appointment

You do not have to arrive with answers. At the first appointment, you talk with the doctor in private about your health, your cycles and how long you have been trying. Earlier reports are looked at, and the doctor may suggest hormone tests, a scan or a semen analysis. When the results are ready, they are explained in plain words, along with whether IVF is advised. Many couples feel nervous at first, and that is completely understood. You can ask questions freely, bring your partner or a family member, and take time before you decide. Nothing is decided in a hurry, and no question is too small.

How IVF unfolds, step by step

Each plan is individual, yet most cycles follow this order. You can read more on our IVF treatment in Noida page.

  1. Talk and records. You share your history and earlier reports with the doctor.
  2. Investigations. Both partners may have hormone tests, a scan or a semen analysis.
  3. The plan. The doctor explains the timeline, what may change and what is optional.
  4. Medicines and checks. Medicines help eggs mature, while scans and blood tests show how your body responds.
  5. Collecting eggs. Mature eggs are taken in a short procedure under medical supervision.
  6. Work in the laboratory. Eggs are fertilised with sperm, and embryos are observed as they develop.
  7. Transfer and testing. A suitable embryo is placed in the uterus when the doctor judges it right, and a pregnancy test follows. If a cycle does not work, the doctor reviews what happened before planning the next step.

A fresh cycle usually takes around two to four weeks from medicines to transfer, though your timeline may be different.

What to carry with you

Bring whatever you have. These items help the doctor most:

  • previous scans, blood tests and semen reports
  • papers from any earlier fertility care
  • a list of medicines you take
  • dates of your last few periods
  • questions you would like answered

A phone photo of each report is enough. If you do not have any of these, that is fine. The doctor will explain which tests are needed.
