Who is IVF usually discussed for?
IVF is a step doctors discuss after looking at test results. A fertility check is usually advised if a woman below 35 has been trying for twelve months without a pregnancy, or for six months if she is 35 or above. Some couples need help sooner. IVF may come up when:
- the tubes are blocked or damaged
- the number of eggs is low
- sperm count or movement is low
- endometriosis affects conception
- a long search for a cause has found nothing
- other treatment has already been tried without result
None of this is a diagnosis. Both partners are tested because either can be involved. When IVF is not yet needed, the doctor tells you honestly.
What happens on your first visit?
At your first visit you sit down with the doctor in private. Share how long you have been trying, how your cycles run and any illness in the past. Reports you bring are read with care. The doctor may then suggest hormone tests, a scan and a semen analysis. When these are done, you hear what they mean, whether IVF is advised and what comes next. Take your time. There is no pressure to decide on the spot, and every question is welcome.
The stages of an IVF cycle
Plans differ from couple to couple, but the stages below are common. You can read more on our IVF treatment in Noida page.
- Meeting the doctor. You describe your history and hand over earlier reports.
- Testing both partners. Hormone tests, a scan and a semen analysis help find what may be affecting conception.
- Agreeing a plan. The doctor walks you through the timeline, what is included, what could change and what is optional.
- Medicines and checks. Medicines help eggs mature. Regular scans and blood tests show how you respond, and the doctor changes the plan if needed.
- Collecting eggs. Mature eggs are taken in a short procedure under medical supervision.
- Making embryos. In the laboratory, eggs are fertilised with sperm, and the embryos are watched as they grow.
- Transfer and follow-up. A suitable embryo is placed in the uterus at a time the doctor chooses. A pregnancy test follows. After an unsuccessful cycle, the doctor goes over what happened before planning ahead.
Most fresh cycles run for around two to four weeks between the first medicine and embryo transfer. Your own schedule may vary.
What should you carry with you?
Bringing a few things saves time on the first day. Take these if you have them:
- earlier scans, blood tests and semen reports
- papers from any fertility treatment done before
- a list of your regular medicines
- the start dates of recent periods
- any questions on your mind
Nothing to bring? Come anyway. The doctor will explain which tests you need.
