When is IVF usually considered?
Doctors usually advise a fertility check when a couple has tried for 12 months without a pregnancy and the woman is under 35. If she is 35 or older, the check is often advised after 6 months. IVF may come up in the talk if:
- you have tried other treatment without a pregnancy
- tests do not show a clear reason for the delay
- the tubes are blocked or damaged
- sperm count or movement is low
- egg reserve is low
- endometriosis or a similar condition is present
This is general guidance, not a diagnosis. A cause can lie with the woman, the man or both, so both partners are usually tested. The doctor decides what is right for you.
What happens when you first meet the doctor?
The first visit is a calm, private conversation. The doctor asks about your health, your cycles and how long you have been trying, and reads any reports you carry. Hormone tests, a scan or a semen analysis may be advised. Once the results are ready, the doctor explains them in plain words and tells you whether IVF is advised. If your job is demanding, mention your work hours so that the next visits can be planned with you.
The stages of an IVF cycle
Plans differ from couple to couple, yet most cycles follow these stages. Our IVF treatment in Noida page explains them further.
- Consultation. The doctor listens to your history and reads earlier reports.
- Investigations. Hormone tests, a scan and a semen analysis help find what may be affecting conception.
- Planning. You are told the steps, the likely timeline and which parts may change.
- Stimulation and monitoring. Medicines help several eggs mature while scans and blood tests track your response.
- Egg collection. A short procedure under medical supervision collects the mature eggs.
- Laboratory stage. Eggs are fertilised with sperm, and the embryos are observed as they develop.
- Embryo transfer. A suitable embryo is placed in the uterus at a time the doctor judges right, followed by a pregnancy test.
From the start of medicines to embryo transfer, a fresh cycle usually takes around two to four weeks. Your timeline may be different.
Things to carry on your first day
Having your papers together saves time in the room. Carry these if you have them:
- past scans, blood tests and semen reports
- notes or reports from earlier fertility care
- the names of medicines you take
- dates of recent periods
- questions you want answered
No reports yet? You are still welcome to come in, and there is no need to wait. The doctor will say which tests to do.
